Granada is a university city, with almost a quarter of its 250,000 inhabitants studying or teaching in the illustrious and ancient University, founded by the most European of Spanish kings, the Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany. This seat of learning, founded in 1528, was heir to the ancient Madraza Islamic University, created by the Sultan Yusuf I, some centuries earlier. Since then, youthful illusions and hopes for the future have been felt in the ancient streets of Granada. Granada is music; the city where Manuel de Falla wrote most of his works, where Andrés Segovia acquired his magic touch on the guitar and where gypsies live their inimitable "zambra" dances in the Sacromonte caves that overlook the omnipresent Alhambra. Granada is poetry. It decorates the stunning walls of the Alhambra palaces and lives in the indelible memory of Federico García Lorca, who was born, lived and created his brilliant work here. Granada is a meeting place and an international centre for conferences, for which it offers its splendid Conference Centre, with a main hall that seats two thousand people. These people find comfortable accommodation in modern hotels of all categories, with quality of service born of long experience of tourism. Granada is life, happiness and bustle in the taverns and pubs in different areas, such as the student haunts of Pedro Antonio de Alarcón and Plaza Nueva, the family atmosphere of Campo del Príncipe, at the foot of the Alhambra, and the exoticism of La Calderería, with its tea shops full of eastern aromas and flavours. Granada is pure art. The Nasrid palaces of the Alhambra and Generalife are a clear example of the region´s al-Andalus past, whose philosophy of "arte de vivir" (the art of living) found its maximum expression in these ornate wall-decorations. Palaces and Moorish houses mark the city, mixed in with grand Baroque and Renaissance buildings, both religious and civil. The Cathedral, the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel), the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, the Cartuja Monastery... These are but a few examples of the wealth of ancient art that competes for attention with the modernity of the Science Park, Manuel de Falla Auditorium, Municipal Sports Centre and Las Gabias golf course. Granada is the Albaicín, a neighbourhood of narrow, winding streets and lively squares. This neighbourhood is both ancient and alive, bursting with personality. It reaches its pinnacle in its secluded cármenes (traditional Moorish mansions), wells, monuments, and, above all, its stunning views. The view of the Alhambra from San Nicolás Square, perched on the hill opposite, has been a source of inspiration for artists and photographers for centuries. Granada is the fortunate epicentre of a province with a range of attractions for tourists, as varied as they are unique: the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, 32 kilometres away; the mild climate, the beaches and the fruits of the Costa Tropical coastline; the valleys and villages hidden away in the Alpujarra Mountains; the classical beauty of the Guadix region and the emotional impact of the villages of El Marquesado; the marks of war and romanticism of the last frontier of the Moorish Al Ándalus empire in the villages in the west of the province of Granada; and a reminder the times of the cave dwellers brought surprisingly to life in the cave-houses of the villages that arise, like oases, from the water and greenery of the immense high plateau.
